E-Hawks Use Defense To Blank Hinton, 33-0

HINTON - An outstanding defensive effort, keyed by four interceptions, allowed Emmetsburg to shut-out Hinton 33-0 Friday evening. The win gives the E-Hawks a 5-1 mark in District play and 5-3 overall mark going into the final game of the regular season this Friday against league-leading West Lyon.

Friday's game at Hinton settled into a defensive battle from the opening kick, as the two teams would trade possessions and punts through the first quarter for a 0-0 tie.

In the second frame, Emmetsburg would strike just five seconds into the quarter when Corbin Saathoff broke loose and raced 19 yards to score the first touchdown of the game. Connor Joyce kicked the extra point for a 13-0 lead with 11:55 to go in the half.

The two teams would trade possessions as the half wound down, but with 3:21 to go in the half, Connor Joyce picked off a pass at the E-Hawks' 39-yard line to kill a Hinton drive.

The E-Hawks quickly took advantage of the turnover and drove downfield, capping off a 61-yard drive with a 21-yard carry by Joyce into the end zone. The conversion kick drifted wide, making the score 13-0 with :50 to go in the half.

Hinton would take over and after a first down, would be intercepted as Zach Foxhoven picked off a pass at the E-Hawks' 20-yard line and returned it five yards to end the first half.

The second half would turn into another defensive struggle as both teams would trade possessions and punts with no scoring, as Emmetsburg had the ball to start the final quarter with a 13-point lead.

Starting at Hinton's 39-yard line, the E-Hawks would work downfield and with 8:27 to go in the game, Corbin Saathoff came up with a 17-yard run for a touchdown. The kick would fail, making the scored 19-0.

Hinton would take over and tried to mount a drive, only to have a pass intercepted in front of their own bench by Dylan Kibbie, who would take the stolen pass 49 yards for a touchdown with 7:38 to go in the game. Connor Joyce would nail the conversion kick to give Emmetsburg a 26-0 lead.

After the kickoff, Hinton took to the airways again, but lightning struck a second time as Dylan Kibbie once again stepped in front of the receiver and stole the pass at the Blackhawks' 38 yard line and returned it to the 16-yard line before being tackled.

With a first down and a big gift, the E-Hawks ground the ball to the end zone and capped the drive off with a seven-yard run by Jon Lace II for the final touchdown of the game. The conversion kick was good once again to make the score 33-0 with 4:14 to go in the contest.

Hinton would go three and out after a 15-yard quarterback sack by Spencer Griffin and punted. The E-Hawk reserves would take over the game and would drive, only to lose the ball on a fumble with 1:32 to play.

Hinton would get a first down and a pair of incomplete passes before Calvin Hart provided a sack to end the game in the E-Hawk shutout victory.

Emmetsburg would gain 285 rushing yards and three passing yards, while Hinton had 23 rushing yards and 54 passing yards in the contest.

For Emmetsburg, Corbin Saathoff rushed the ball 13 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Dylan Kibbie had 69 yards off 16 carries, Nick Schany added 69 yards off 18 carries and Connor Joyce had 54 yards off nine rushes. Ethan Berven had two carries for 10 yards, Jon Lace II had seven yards and a touchdown off one rush and Alex Gramowski had 10 yards off two rushes.

Connor Joyce made one completion on two attempts for three yards, with Blake VerMulm making the catch.

Defensively, Spencer Griffin had 10 tackles and a quarterback sack, while Calvin Hart added a sack. Dylan Kibbie made eight tackles with two interceptions and Bret Hoyman added nine tackles, while Zach Foxhoven had three tackles and an interception and Connor Joyce added a tackle and an interception to the effort.
