E-Hawks Hitting The Road To Take On Hinton

October 12, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

With two games left in the regular season, Emmetsburg's E-Hawks don't have an easy road to travel by anyone's sense of the imagination. This Friday, the road is the long trip to Hinton for a meeting with the Blackhawks, the third in as many years, the first being a playoff game in 2015, before the Blackhawks became a district opponent last year.

Even though Hinton lost several of their top caliber players to graduation last year, the cupboard isn't bare for the Blackhawks, according to Emmetsburg Head Football Coach Mike Dunlap.

"They are down a bit, but they're not down and out by any means,"?Dunlap observed. "They are a good team, very solid."

According to Dunlap, the Blackhawks operate out of a Double-wing offense with the Super toss. "They are very, very physical, that's for sure."

Hinton's defensive alignment will challenge the E-Hawks ground attack as well.

"They are a 3-5-3 team on defense,"?Dunlap noted, "and are multiple blitzing as well. We have to be ready to pick up the blitz because they are very physical."

After Friday's win over Alta-Aurelia, Dunlap was pleased with the overall performance of the E-Hawks.

"I thought we handled the conditions very well, both offensively and defensively,"?Dunlap said.

Even with less than desireable conditions, the E-Hawks gave a good accounting of themselves, according to the head coach.

"I thought we played well against a quality team," Dunlap said. "They have some very good athletes on their team and I was pleased with our efforts."

But looking ahead to Friday's game at Hinton, the emphasis for Emmetsburg is going to be familiar and basic.

"We need to continue to clean up all three phases of our game,"?Dunlap said. "We need to clean up on the offense, the defense and on our special teams, and eliminate the mental mistakes."
