One of the best "public statements" made on behalf of the Wind Energy project in Palo Alto County appeared in this newspaper recently. It was a public statement made in the form of a "letter to the editor" by a local family. Each family member's name was included.

At the time I read it, I was preparing my own statement for use at the scheduled public hearing Thursday (Oct. 4, 2017) at the VFW. I thought, "I could not say it better." It's about our "families." The survival of family farms is always at stake for many land owners. Of course, those of us who don't live on farms benefit in other ways.

Every season farmers struggle to keep up with the rising costs, praying for weather that's favorable to their crops needs, meeting cost of living expenses for the family, thinking about college for the kids, and staying healthy. That's a lot of worry. Not often does something come along like "wind power" to hedge against possible low yields or depressed markets.

That family letter made the best argument of all for the Supervisors to VOTE YES. (1) electricity/amenities that run our appliances and keep the lights on, (2) "hundreds of millions of dollars" contributed to the area over the years, (3) property tax revenue for Palo Alto County and easement payments to landowners, (4) tax revenue for county schools, fire departments, our roads, parks, and jobs, jobs, jobs.

I could not top that family's letter. It went on to include their gratitude for the "time and effort" the Supervisors spent doing diligence, creating legal ordinances, and sponsoring open free speech-hearings to assure public input to get it right.

There was even more in that family letter that you may want to read when you get time (October 3, 2017). The only thing I could have added was my bias toward economic development with hi-tech jobs. One of the first Wind Tech programs in the nation was born right here at Iowa Lakes Community College (Estherville campus).

Thanks for the letter; Eric, Mary, Thomas, and Aliza. I couldn't say it better.
