Ribbon Cutting Friday Morning At Iowa Lakes’ Emmetsburg Campus

Student Services Addition To Be Unveiled

October 5, 2017
Emmetsburg News

Iowa Lakes Community College will open the doors to the new Student Services addition on the Emmetsburg campus this Friday morning, Oct. 6. The ribbon cutting in Emmetsburg will take place at 10:00 a.m. and will be followed by a ribbon cutting at the College's Spencer Campus in the Gateway North Mall at 1:15 p.m. that afternoon.

In Emmetsburg, Friday's event kicks off with the weekly Emmetsburg Chamber Coffee event, starting at 9:30 a.m. The formal ribbon cutting ceremony will take place in the new addition at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to attend the ceremonies and view the progress on the project. Guests are encouraged to enter through Entrance One or Entrance Two on Friday morning.

Participating in the ribbon cutting ceremonies will be College President Valerie Newhouse, as well as Board of Trustees Vice President Pat Kibbie, Emmetsburg Campus Executive Dean Tom Brotherton, Professor Mark Zabawa, student Nate Benson and Director of Auxiliary Services Bill Lapczenski.

The new Student Services addition connects two parts of the campus that were previously separated by an outdoor courtyard. The new space now becomes the 'center' of the college where visitors will find an easily identifiable main entrance to the college and can also be provided with contiguous services which guests typically need.

In addition, the $6.2 million facility also provides convenient visitor parking with the addition of additional parking spaces in front of the college, as well as enhanced building security. The new structure will also help the college realize significant energy efficiencies and will also provide an outdoor storm water retention solution.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend and view the new addition to the Emmetsburg Campus, as well as remodeling in the existing facilities on Friday.

The second ribbon cutting for the College will take place Friday afternoon at the Gateway North center, the Spencer campus of Iowa Lakes, which is located at 1900 North Grand Ave.

The ribbon cutting at the Gateway North complex not only involves Iowa Lakes; it also features the various partner/owners and those renting space in the Gateway North facility. The celebration begins with an open house at 1 p.m. and the ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:15 p.m.

Scheduled to participate in the Spencer event include College President Valerie Newhouse, Board of Trustees member Jane Nolan Goeken, Spencer Campus Director Mary Faber, Associate Professor Abi Sedlacek, student Jose Mendez and Nyle Dotson, owner of Center Cleaners and the head of the Gateway North Regime, which represents the businesses located at Gateway North.

The project in Spencer involved a badly needed roof renovation to protect the contents of the building as well as a refreshing and updating of the exterior of the building. The $2.9 million project included additional costs that were paid for by those businesses owning portions of Gateway North. Security was also enhanced for the facility through a computerized keyless entry system.

Funding for both the Emmetsburg and Spencer projects was made possible through the passage of a bond referendum that was approved by voters in the Iowa Lakes Community College Merged Area III Service area February of 2016.
