Benefits of Wind Energy in Palo Alto

October 3, 2017
Emmetsburg News

As a long-time resident and landowner near Emmetsburg, I am writing to express my support for Invenergy wind farm development within the county. At the recent public hearing at the VFW, it appeared to me that the discussion was dominated by a vocal minority opposing wind energy harvesting with many personal and trivial arguments against the proposed wind project. Palo Alto County's restrictive zoning ordinance has already addressed many of the concerns of area residents. I believe consideration should be given to the positive beneficial effects on the county if the investment in wind energy goes forward.

The economic benefits of a 300-400 million dollar wind farm project will certainly include significant property tax revenues for the county, construction employment during the development phase, and a few high paying permanent jobs for the tech and maintenance help needed to support the windmills. These permanent jobs will help stabilize the population of the county. Collectively, nearly two million dollars in annual payments to the farmers and landowners who sign wind farm contracts will enhance the business activities within the county for many years to come. Additionally, wind energy conversion is a clean, renewable energy source which reduces the production of greenhouse gases providing a benefit to future generations. It should also be noted that any damage to roads, drainage systems, and waterways will be mitigated by the developer at no cost to the county or landowners.

I would urge you to approve the necessary permits that the Invenergy Wind?Project can move forward. Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully Submitted,
