HULL?-- Emmetsburg's E-Hawks gave one of the top-ranked Class 1A football teams something to think about Friday night in a 35-21 loss to Western Christian of Hull. The loss drops Emmetsburg to 1-1 in district play and 2-2 on the season as they prepare to journey to Milford this Friday night for a meeting with the Okoboji Pioneers.

Emmetsburg would take the opening kick and started a time-consuming drive that would get to the Western Christian 13-yard line, but on a fourth and eight, the E-Hawks would try a 30-yard field goal by Connor Joyce, but the kick fell short with 4:27 to go in the opening quarter.

The Wolfpack would take over and quickly moved downfield to scored off a 46-yard run with 2:33 to go in the quarter for a 7-0 lead after the conversion kick.

Emmetsburg would go nowhere on their next possession and punted, only to see Western Christian score as time expired in the quarter for a 14-0 lead.

The E-Hawks would take over to start the second frame, and once again used the clock to their advantage and earned a five-yard touchdown from Nick Schany with 6:19 to play in the half. Joyce's kick was good to cut the deficit to 7-14 as the Wolfpack took over on the resulting kick, but would punt. Emmetsburg got the ball back, but would turn the ball over on downs.

But on the first play from scrimmage, Nick Schany intercepted the Wolfpack's Caleb Harmsen's pass at the 35 and returned it to the 40 for a huge turnover with 2:03 to go in the half. However, Emmetsburg was unable to capitalize on the gift and turned the ball over on downs with :55 to go in the half, but Western Christian would end up punting just before the half, giving the E-Hawks a last shot at a late score, but time would run out with the E-Hawks trailing 7-14 at the intermission.

Western Christian would get the ball to start the second half, and would score with 10:40 to go in the quarter off a 48 yard pass play. The conversion gave the Wolfpack a 21-7 lead as Emmetsburg took over and started moving the ball once again, only to turn the ball over on downs with 5:21 to go in the third.

Western Christian would get the ball back but had to punt the ball away with 2:51 to go in the quarter. Emmetsburg would end the quarter driving to midfield.

The drive continued downfield, but with 9:53to play in the contest, Connor Joyce was intercepted at the Wolfpack 21-yard line to kill the drive.

The Wolfpack would quickly drive downfield and scored off a 55-yard run with 8:51 to play for a 28-7 lead after the conversion kick.

Emmetsburg would get a 23-yard return from Corbin Saathoff on the kickoff and then picked up a huge 51-yard run that would eventually culminate with Saathoff running in from five yards out for a touchdown to give the E-Hawks new life with 7:05 to go in the contest, but the conversion kick was blocked for a 28-13 tally.

Emmetsburg would line up for an onside kick but were penalized for an offsides call. Lining up five yards deeper, Blake VerMulm kicked the ball onside and Corbin Saathoff recovered it after it hit a Western Christian player at the 50-yard line.

The E-Hawks went to work and marched to the 20, where a pair of penalties on the Wolfpack put the ball on the five-yard line. Connor Joyce would bull into the end zone from five yards out with 4:51 to go in the game to score, and then added two-point conversion to cut the score to 28-21 with 4:51 to go in the game.

Another onside kick was recovered by Western Christian, who would drive downfield and added a three-yard touchdown with 1:29 to play, effectively ending the game with the 35-21 final score.

Emmetsburg would amass 375 rushing yards to Western Christian's 277 yards, with Connor Joyce completing four of 16 passes for 66 yards with one interception, while the Wolfpack completed seven of 12 passes with one interception for 113 yards.

Nick Schany would rush 27 times for 155 yards and Corbin Saathoff added 16 carries for 118 yards. Dylan Kibbie added 18 carries for 97 yards and Connor Joyce had nine rushes for five yards.
