The service for Kenneth Fread was held on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ruthven. Reverend Kris Hackbart officiated. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of Funeral Arrangements.

Kenneth Earl Fread, son of Earnest Aaron and Anne Marie Sewell-Fread was born February 2, 1923 in Emmetsburg. Kenneth passed away September 6, 2017 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Kenneth met the love of his life, Vivian Maxine Roland-Fread prior to entering the U. S. Navy. They were united in marriage on Aug. 30, 1944. Five children were born into the family - Roger, Barbara, Nancy, Patricia, and Lisa.

Kenneth served his country in the Pacific on the LCI 67, a troop carrier, during WW II. Kenneth and Vivian settled in Ruthven after the war, making it their home for the remainder of his life.

They served the Ruthven community well. Kenneth farmed north of Ruthven until 1961 when he purchased the Ruthven Produce. They handled chickens, eggs, and sold Golden Sun Feeds. Kenneth sold AMC cars for Miner Motors in Estherville, 1965-1970.

In the fall of 1970, Ken and Vivian took a giant leap of faith in the Ruthven community and built the Lost Island Golf Club on the northeast corner of Lost Island Lake. Ken built and manicured a beautiful nine-hole golf course, offering hours of entertainment to those whose passion was golf. His wife ran the club house, serving many hungry golfers great meals and snacks.

Kenneth enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and golfing. He and Vivian had a large garden each summer and Kenneth liked helping Vivian with the gardening and canning the produce they grew. He also enjoyed doing yardwork. Kenneth was an avid Iowa and Iowa State football and basketball fan, rarely missing the opportunity to watch their games.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 73 years, Vivian, one son Roger (Karen Lee) of New Sharon and two daughters Barbara (Chester) Garrett of Williamston, S. C. and Lisa (Craig) Markley of Ames. Six grandchildren Brian (Amy) Fread, Regina (Maury) Anderson, Melanie (Ben) Dugan, Josh (Casey) Garrett, Kayla Cable and Cody Markley.
