Compass Point Prevention spokesperson Linda Hallengren was on hand to provide information to the Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, September 5.

Hallengren presented the Board with information concerning the "Social Host," which relates to underage possession or consumption of alcohol.

"This actually went into effect as of July 1, 2014; however, not many people know about it," Hallengren said. "The main change is that now if a property knowingly allows someone under the age of 18 to consume alcohol on their property, they will be charged with a simple misdemeanor and fined $200."

"Why are we talking about a law that from 2014?" Supervisor Linus Solberg questioned.

"Because, what we want to do now is get it out to the public so they are aware of it," Hallengren replied. "You guys are stakeholders in the community and we have discovered that not many people are aware of this law even though it is three years old."

Hallengren was looking for ideas on what would be the best way to get this out to the public.

"Peter [County Attorney] what do you think about this?" Supervisor Craig Merrill asked.

"I think it's a matter of education," Palo Alto County Attorney, Peter Hart answered.

"I think you need to start with public health," Solberg suggested. "It looks like maybe you should be going around to the schools."

The Supervisors gave Hallengren several additional ideas, including going to middle schools and high schools.

In other business, Palo Alto County Engineer Walter Davis-Oeth presented a utility permit for approval from Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative in Great Oak Township, Section 25 and Section 26 to bore a single cable under 450th Ave. This is to upgrade the existing service to a grain bin site. With little further discussion, unanimous approval was given.

In final business, The Board approved a resolution to amend the current county budget. Davis-Oeth also presented a resolution to amend the Secondary Road DOT budget. Both resolutions were unanimously approved in a roll call vote.
