SPENCER - Emmetsburg's Cross Country team got to start the season Thursday night at Spencer. But it would be Mother Nature who had the final say as only the Junior Varsity girls were able to complete their race. Thunder and lightning prompted officials to clear the competitors from the course just as the JV?boys were to start their race, and after a half-hour delay, thevarsity girls were preparing to start when another round of lightning brought the cancellation of the event.

The Lady E-Hawk junior varsity gave a good accounting of themselves in their event, as two runners would earn top-ten finishes. Freshman Raylene Poeppe would earn fourth place with a time of 24:41.99, and Jamie Bird earned eighth place in the field with her time of 24:58.37.

Esther Stroem would place 16th with a time of 26:20.84, while Hannah Merwald finished 38th in a time of 28:04.92. Emily Fuller would turn in a time of 29:21.83 to finish 47th overall and Maggie Nelson rounded out Emmetsburg's efforts with her time of 32.55.15, which translated into 60th place.
