School Board Election Filing Period Open

Consider Serving On Your School Board

The opportunity for area residents interested in the education of our children to serve on local school boards is at hand. The filing period for candidate for the upcoming September School Board Election period opened on Monday, July 10, and will conclude on Thursday, August 3. School Board elections in Iowa are set for Tuesday, September 12.

To file for school board elections, a person must be an eligible resident of their respective school district and must obtain a nomination petition from either the local School Board secretary. To be placed on the September ballot, candidates must submit their nomination petitions with the required signatures with either their local School Board Secretary no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 3. Nomination papers will be delivered to the County Auditor/Commissioner of Elections no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, August 4.

Emmetsburg

In the Emmetsburg Community School District, three seats will be up for election. The seats currently held by Tammy Naig and Rick Bird will be up for election, as the two board members have indicated they will not run for re-election. The third seat, originally held by Kim Campbell, was filled by the appointment of Jane Hoyman in January of this year after Campbell resigned her seat. Hoyman has not indicated whether she will run for a full term on the board.

Candidates in the Emmetsburg School District must obtain 33 signatures on their nomination petitions in order to be placed on the September ballot.

Graettinger-Terril

There are two seats up for election on the Graettinger-Terril Community School board, as the terms of Kyle Norris and Matthew Hanson are up for re-election. Both candidates have indicated they will run for re-election to their positions.

Candidates in the Graettinger-Terril Community School District must obtain 17 signatures on their nomination petitions in order to be placed on the September ballot.

Ruthven-Ayrshire

In the Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School District, three seats on the board are up for election in September. The seats of Susan Sikora, along with Bruce Long and Darin Malm, are up for election.

Candidates in the Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School District must obtain 10 signatures on their nomination petitions in order to be placed on the September ballot.

West Bend-Mallard

For the West Bend-Mallard Community School District, the seats of Wendell Schmidt, David Bruellman and Mike Thatcher are up for election.

Candidates in the West Bend-Mallard Community School District must obtain 14 signatures on their nomination petitions in order to be placed on the September ballot.

Voters in Palo Alto County will also be asked to cast ballots in September for a trustees' position on the Board of Trustees for Iowa Lakes Community College. Palo Alto County is in Director District VI, with the seat currently held by Pat Kibbie of Emmetsburg up for election. In addition, the Director District VII seat currently held by Bob Jennings of Algona is also up for election, as is the Director District III seat currently held by Christopher Fuhrman of Spirit Lake.
