Emmetsburg News

An investigation into a pair of incidents in a city park has led to charges against an Emmetsburg juvenile.

According to Emmetsburg Police Chief Eric Hanson, on Tuesday, June 27, the Emmetsburg Police Department was notified by the Emmetsburg Department of Public Properties that sometime during the overnight hours on June 26-27, a fire had been started in the mens' bathroom at the Soper Park Bathhouse. The fire was confined to the sink area of the bathroom. Damages to the bathroom were estimated to be minimal.

On June 28, the Emmetsburg Police Department received another report from the Department of Public Properties that another fire had bee started in the mens' bathroom at the Soper Park Bathhouse. The second fire was set in the toilet stall area. The damage to the bathroom was again estimated to be minimal.

The Department of Public Properties began a review of the surveillance camera system that had been recently installed, due to other recent acts of criminal mischief involving the Soper Park Bathhouse.

As a result of the surveillance camera recordings, two possible suspects were identified. Those two suspects were interviewed by the Emmetsburg Police Department and the person responsible for both of the fires in the mens' bathroom was identified.

The Emmetsburg Police Department issued a juvenile referral against a 15-year old male juvenile from Emmetsburg on a charge of Reckless Use of Fire, a Serious Misdemeanor. The juvenile was subsequently released to the custody of a parent and the referral will be handled by the Juvenile Court System.
