Lady E-Hawks Build Big Lead Before Mother Nature Wins

July 4, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Mother Nature ended up as the winner on Thursday evening as Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks and West Hancock were engaged in a softball matchup. Lightning and thunder from an approaching thunderstorm prompted a brief delay before officials decided to call the game incomplete with Emmetsburg holding an 11-3 lead after two and a third innings of play.

West Hancock would be retired in order to start the contest on Thursday, and Emmetsburg would come up and batted all the way through their batting order in the bottom of the first frame. Lindsay Carter walked to lead off before Sarah?Simington, Kate Jackson, Molly Schany and Annie Brennan all singled to score four runs. An error on Emma Anderson's at-bat scored Brennan before Parker Traub got on base off an error, but a double play on Gillian Nolan's at-bat retired Nolan and Anderson, leaving Traub stranded when Mikayla Frerichs grounded out to end the inning with a 5-0 Emmetsburg lead.

West Hancock would open the second with a ground out and a strikeout, but drew a walk, only to leave the runner waiting at first when the at-bat ended.

In the bottom of the second, Emmetsburg started over with Lindsay Carter drawing a walk. Sarah Simington singled and Kate Jackson got on base off an error that scored Carter and Simington. Molly Schany singled to score Jackson, and Annie Brennan was hit by a pitch. Emma Anderson singled to score Schany and a single from Gillian Nolan scored Anderson's run. Parker Traub would add a single before Mikalya Frerichs flew out for the first out.

Lindsay Carter would come up to bat a second time in the inning and drew her third straight walk to load the bases with Lady E-Hawks, but Sarah Simington would line out to third for the second out and Kate Jackson lined out to second base to leave the sacks loaded as the inning came to a close.

In the top of the third, Emmetsburg made several defensive changes to the lineup and West Hancock was able to take advantage of the switches, as they got a leadoff walk before a strikeout. A walk and an error loaded the bases but a fielders' choice took out the lead runner at home plate before an error allowed three runs to score when the ball was mishandled.

But before the next batter could take a pitch, lightning and thunder prompted umpires Glen Caron and Dan Schreiber to send the teams to the dugouts to wait the required 30 minutes. However, continual thunder and lightning soon prompted the umpires, coaches and school officials to cancel the game at that point with no continuation.

In the two and a third innings, Lindsay Carter allowed three unearned runs with three walks and three strikeouts.

Emmetsburg got two hits from Sarah Simington and Molly Schany along with singles from Kate Jackson, Annie Brennan, Emma Anderson, Gillian Nolan and Parker Traub.
