Thunderstorm Decides Thursday Night Game

July 4, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

A?non-conference matchup Thursday evening between Emmetsburg's E-Hawks and the Eagles of West Hancock would ultimately be decided by a thunderstorm as play in the contest was halted at the start of the fourth inning with Emmetsburg leading 2-0. Lightning and thunder from approaching thunderstorms forced the officials and coaches to cancel the contest without a makeup date.

West Hancock opened the game by stranding a runner after a base hit in the top of the first. Emmetsburg would come up to bat, but would be retired in order in their half of the inning.

In the top of the second, the Eagles would get three base hits in a row, but would end up leaving one runner on base after a strikeout and a double play at third base after a line shot to E-Hawk pitcher Ben Dunlap to end the threat.

In the bottom of the second inning, Conner Joyce led off for the E-Hawks by drawing a walk. But a ground out of Brent Wesley would put Joyce out at second before Max Dunlap drew a walk. Dunlap would be left waiting at first base, however, when Hunter McAllister was called out on strikes to end the inning.

West Hancock came up to bat in the top of the third and got a leadoff single and moved the runner to second on a pop fly out. The runner moved for third but was put out on a throw after a base hit for the second out and a fly ball to center field ended the at-bat.

The E-Hawks would step up in the bottom of the third inning and got Corbin Saathoff on base off an error on his at-bat. Saathoff took second base on the error, and moved to third base when Nick Schany belted a double to the left field fence.

Dylan Kibbie would deliver a two-RBI?Single to score Saathoff and Schany before he was caught stealing at second for the first out.

Matt Kibbie would be struck out for the second out and Jeremiah Weir hit a fly ball to right field to end the inning with Emmetsburg leading 2-0.

But as the first West Hancock batter stepped into the batters' box, lightning brought the game to a halt before the cancellation call was made.

Ben Dunlap pitched three innings in the incomplete game, giving up six hits with one strikeout.

The E-Hawks got a double from Nick Schany and a base hit from Dylan Kibbie.
