Palo Alto County Celebrates Independence

Even though Independence Day is on Tuesday, that won't stop the county from having fun. Soper Park will be the hub for all of Emmetsburg's activities. The morning will start at 9 a.m. with children's games sponsored by the VFW. These games include tricycle races, a water balloon toss, and a foot race. At 10 a.m. FUEL Emmetsburg will sponsor a bounce house for children at Soper Park. FUEL Emmetsburg will also be sponsoring a Co-ed sand volleyball tournament. One woman is required per team and to be on the court at all times. There is a fee to sign up, but the winners receive a cash prize.

Also at 10:00 a.m. there will be a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for seventh and eighth graders as well as high school students. The tournament will have separate divisions for boys and girls. Registration for the tournament is at 10 a.m. in the park.

From 10 a.m. to noon, Crafts with Connie will take place in the Shelter House. Ceramic painting is available at a cost for all ages.

The VFW will offer a hotdog lunch at the southeast corner of Soper Park. It is a freewill donation to eat. The donation will go towards raising money for the Brushy Creek Honor Flight.

At 1 p.m. Mayor Myrna Heddinger will address the town along with a VFW Gun Salute. Bring your lawn chairs to enjoy the municipal band concert that will follow the mayoral address.

Supper will be served for a cost at 6 p.m. The Burger Bar Barbecue will be grilled by the Palo Alto Cattleman and is sponsored by the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce. The burger bar includes a hamburger, all toppings, chips, and a drink.

Mojo Productions will be joining the party during supper. Mojo Productions will be DJ-ing until the fireworks begin.

Finally, fireworks will be discharged from First Island. Come to Soper Park for a great view. KEMB will be playing patriotic music throughout the fireworks show.

West Bend

West Bend is holding their celebration Friday, June 30 Sunday, July 2 and they have something for every age. On Friday, June 30 at 8 a.m. will be the Hawkeye FFA Alumni Antique Tractor Ride, 5 p.m. will be the kids pedal tractor pull on Main Street. Also at 5 p.m. the Palo Alto county Cattlemen will have BBQ on Main Street. The 5K Color Run/Walk at the West Bend Mallard High School Track and ending the evening with a street dance on Main Street with Mojo Productions.

Saturday, July 1, the celebration continues with a parade at 11 a.m. with food stands opening at the school grounds after the parade. All day activities will be at the school and include kids inflatables from 12:30 -4:30 p.m., Bingo at the shelter house from 12:30 4:30 p.m., the Hawkeye Petting Zoo from 1:00 3:00 p.m., Baggo Tournament at the baseball field parking lot at 1:30 p.m. and the West Bend Fire Departments Kids water fights at 2 p.m. There will be entertainment at 4 p.m. by The Sound Exchange

At 4:30 p.m. the Kampen Foods Chicken Eating Contest will begin, a Variety Show at 5 p.m., the Pacesetters will perform at 6 p.m., the auction will be at 6:30 p.m. and at 8 p.m. will be the Mindy's Miles Bike Give-Away.

The Sound Exchange will entertain at 9 p.m. and the fireworks at 10 p.m. They will end their celebration on Sunday, July 2 with a Chamber Breakfast at the Community Center.


Cylinder has a Fourth of July celebration on Sunday, July 2 beginning at 6 p.m. in the City Park. There will be Kids Games including Fishing for Prizes, Jumpy House Water Balloons, Rubber Duck Games and a Bucket Brigade. There will also be a Beach Bum Barbeque with pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs and free watermelon. New this year will be snow cones. The Kris Karr Band will be playing classic rock at 7 p.m. and the fireworks will be at dusk.
