Lady E-Hawks Win Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Tourney

GARNER - Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks earned a 4-3 win over Mason City Newman Catholic and a 7-3 win over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura to win the GHV?Invitational tournament Saturday. The wins improve Emmetsburg to 12-15 on the year.

In the first game of the day, the Lady E-Hawks would escape with the 4-3 win over the Knights of Newman, after Newman took an early 1-0 lead following one inning. The two teams each stranded a runner in the second and Emmetsburg tied the game in the bottom of the third as Macy McAllister came home off a double by Kate Jackson.

After a scoreless fourth frame, Newman pushed two runs over the plate in the tot of the fifth for a 3-1 lead when the at-bat ended.

Emmetsburg came up in the bottom of the fifth and led off with single by Lindsay Carter and a fielders's choice from Macy McAllister. A huge triple by Sarah Simington scored the two runs and Simington would score off a single from Kate Jackson, who got to third off a single from Molly Schany, but the duo were left waiting when the inning ended.

Trailing 4-3, Newman would go down in order in the top of the sixth, but Emmetsburg would strand Raven Brown in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the seventh, Newman would get a base hit with one out, but left their runner standed to end the game.

Mikayla Frerichs earned the win, giving up three runs off eight hits with three strikeouts. The Lady E-Hawks got a triple from Sarah Simington and two doubles and a single from Kate Jackson. Macy Mcallister, Molly Schany, Emma Anderson and Lindsay Carter all added base hits to the winning effort.

For the championship, the Lady E-Hawks defeated the host Cardinals by a 7-3 final tally. GHV?would get a run in the top of the first, but Emmetsburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the frae as Lindsay Carter and Molly Schany would come home for a 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the second with two runs, but left two runners waiting. Emmetsburg would go down in order, but returned the favor to GHV?in the top of the third.

The Lady E-Hawks would retake the lead in the bottom of the third as Lindsay Carter and Sarah Simington both came home to score, but left Molly Schany and Annie Brennan waiting.

In the top of the fourth, GHV was retired in order and Emmetsburg added two more runs in their half of the fram, with Parker Traub and Mikayla Frerichs both scoring off Frerich's two-run home run.

Trailing 3-6 to start the fifth, the Cardinals were struck out in order and Emmetsburg would strand Gillian Nolan at first base in their half of the inning. GHV would get a base runner in the top of the sixth off a single, but left her waiting. Emmetsburg would get a base hit from Parker Traub that would turn into a run off a single from Kate Jackson in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-3 lead to start the final at-bat.

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura would be retired in order in the top of the seventh to give Emmetsburg the win and tourney title.

Lindsay Carter would pitch three innings, allowing three runs, two earned, off two hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Mikayla Frerichs got the win in relief in four innings, allowing one hit with seven strikeouts.

Emmetsburg got a home run from and a single from Mikayla Frerichs, while Lindsay Carter, Sarah Simington, Kate Jackson, Molly Schany , Annie Brennan, Gillian Nolan and Kaitlyn Jamison all had hits in the winning effort.
