Police Warning Of New Telephone Scam

June 20, 2017
Emmetsburg News

A?new telephone scam is making the rounds in the area and Emmetsburg Police are issuing a warning to area residents to be aware and alert of this latest scam.

According to Emmetsburg Police Chief Eric Hanson, the Emmetsburg Police Department was made aware late last week of a new type of telephone scam that has started making the rounds in Emmetsburg and Palo Alto County.

Information on the scam was made available to the Emmetsburg Police Department by officials of Palo Alto County Health Systems and Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.

According to the most current information, the scam entails an online pharmacy company calling residents who are not customers of the online pharmacy company. The scammers ask the victims to provide information on their health insurance. When the victim does not provide the information, the online pharmacy company then contacts the victim's actual pharmacy or their doctor's office, and requests permission to fill a prescription in the victim's name. At that time, the scammers then obtain the insurance information of the victim. With that insurance information, billings are made to the insurance carriers fraudulently for payments to the scammers.

"The Emmetsburg Police Department is warning our local residents, as well as residents throughout the county and the area to be alert to these calls," noted Chief Hanson. "We would encourage anyone who receives one of these calls to be extremely cautious about giving out any kind of information, especially personal information such as insurance or bank account information to callers you do not know."

Hanson urges anyone receiving such a call or any other scam call to notify their nearest law enforcement agency as soon as possible.
