E-Hawks Lead Early But Fall To Newell-Fonda

June 15, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

A back-and-forth game Tuesday night saw Emmetsburg take a lead early but fall behind in the closing stages to fall 13-5 to Newell-Fonda. The loss drops the E-Hawks to 4-10 on the season.

Newell-Fonda would plate a run in the top of the first inning as the E-Hawks would leave a runner stranded in their half of the inning. With a 1-0 lead to start the second, the visiting Mustangs would strand a runner at second.

Emmetsburg came up in the bottom of the second and led off with a walk from Brent Wesley, but after two outs, an error put Max Dunlap on base and allowed Wesley to come home. A walk of Nick Schany was followed by Dylan Kibbie being hit by a pitch before Will Schany singled to score Dunlap's run, but the bases were left loaded when the inning ended with Emmetsburg holding a 2-1 lead.

Newell-Fonda left a runner stranded in the third when the E-Hawks pulled a double play to end the at-bat. But, the E-Hawks would leave Matt Kibbie waiting in their half of the inning.

The Mustangs were retired in order in the fourth, and Emmetsburg would get hits from Max Dunlap, Dylan Kibbie and Will Schany that would allow Kibbie to plate a run for a 3-1 E-Hawk advantage to start the fifth inning.

The Mustangs found some offense in the top of the fifth, however, as they would use three base hits and a double to plate four runs before Emmetsburg's defense could make the stop. The E-Hawks came up in their half of the inning and got a single, two walks and a double to score Matt Kibbie and Hunter McAllister, but left Nick Schany and Dylan Kibbie waiting when the inning ended.

With the score knotted at 5-5, Newell-Fonda would add two runs in the top of the sixth inning off and error and three base hits for a 7-5 lead. Emmetsburg would get a single from Brent Wesley but left him waiting when the inning ended.

In the top of the seventh, the Mustangs would strike again, this time putting the game out of reach with six runs coming over the plate off five singles and a double as the ball fell in opportune places for Newell-Fonda.

The E-Hawks would come up to bat a final time and got a double from Max Dunlap with one out and a walk from Nick Schany before Dylan Kibbie hit into a Fielders'' choice that put Dunlap out at third base. With two out, Will Schany flew out to center field to end the game in the 13-5 loss for the E-Hawks.

For the E-Hawks, Hunter McAllister would pitch four and two-thirds innings, giving up five earned runs off six hits, issuing six walks and striking out five batters. Max Dunlap relieved for two and a third innings and was charged with the loss, as he gave up eight runs, six earned, off 10 hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.

For the E-Hawks, Max Dunlap and Dylan Kibbie both had doubles and singles, while Will Schany had two hits and Brent Wesley and Matt Kibbie both added base hits to the final effort.

The E-Hawks traveled to Spencer on Wednesday night to resume Lakes Conference action and then return home tonight (Thursday) to host LeMars for the final time.

Emmetsburg was schedule to play this Saturday, June 17, at West Hancock in a tournament. However, West Hancock officials cancelled the tournament late last week.

Monday's postponement of a Lakes Conference game with Spirit Lake will be re-scheduled in the near future.
