Richard A. Kunz 1927-2017

ESTHERVILLE -- A Mass of Christian Burial for Richard Kunz will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville. The Rev. Father Merlin Schrad will officiate.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Henry Olson Funeral Home in Estherville is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is at 9:15 a.m., until time of service at 10, at the church only on Saturday.

Richard Anthony Kunz, the son of Leonard and Mae (Koeller) Kunz was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Ellington Township. He graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School in 1945.

During World War II, Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served active duty until August 1946.

On Feb. 14, 1951, he was united in marriage to Doris Bleckwenn. To this union three sons were born: Steven, Gary, and Mark. On Jan. 30, 1997, he was united in marriage to Leona (Eickhoff) Thilges.

Richard spent most of his working career as a custom meat-cutter at Kunz Cold Storage in Emmetsburg and Graettinger Meat Processors in Graettinger. After his retirement he and Leona managed the Northstar Apartments in Emmetsburg for several years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and a wide variety of home projects.

On May 29th, 2017, Richard passed away at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Mae; six brothers: Harold, Howard, Elmer, Vincent, Leo and Raymond; and sister, Coletta Currans; a daughter-in-law, Judy Kunz, wife, of Gary Kunz; as well as his first wife and mother of his three sons, Doris Kunz.

He is survived by his wife, Leona of Estherville; three sons, Steven and wife, Patricia of Johnston; Gary Kunz of St. Paul, MN and Mark Kunz and wife, Melissa of Shakopee, MN; four step-children; Michael Schultz and wife, Martha of Maple City, MI; Chester Schultz of Prior Lake, MN; Sharon Riley and husband, Gary of Fort Worth, TX; and Dean Schultz and wife, Linda of Estherville; two brothers, Leonard (Buck) Kunz of Boise, ID and LeRoy Kunz of Emmetsburg; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
