LAKE?MILLS - While the first round seemed a little shaky, Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks came through when it counted on Monday afternoon. Playing in the Class 2A Regional final at the Rice Lake Country Club, Emmetsburg claimed its third straight qualification for the Iowa Girls State Golf Tournament.

Emmetsburg bested the four-team field on Monday by shooting a team score of 372. Ogden was second with a 383, while South Winneshiek placed third with a 398 and Grundy Center was fourth with a 413.

Emmetsburg's Allison Freeman would also qualify for the Individual State Tournament as well by virtue of her fifth place finish in the individual standings through a handicap hole after she tied with Skyler Luzum of South Winneshiek for the fourth place finish with a round of 89.

Freeman, one of the three seniors on the squad, led Emmetsburg with rounds of 47 and 42 to tally an 89, while fellow senior Sarah Pugh shot rounds of 45 and 46 for a 91 stroke total. Junior Parker Traub would come up with rounds of 45 and 48 on the day to card a 93 and Freshman Gretchen Hofstad shot rounds of 51 and a 48 to tally a 99 to round out Emmetsburg's counting scores.

Senior Gillian Nolan would shoot rounds of 50 and 56 for a 106 stroke total and Sophomore Molly McCain carded rounds of 56 and 54 for a 110.

"It was a great day for golf," noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Ted Riley. "This makes the seventh year out of the past 10 that Emmetsburg has qualified for the State Tournament. I guess if there's any secret to the success these girls have had over the years, it would have to be the ability to engage them, encourage them, energize them and excite them. Those are all part of the education process that makes a team successful."
