John C. Papadakes 1930-2017

Graveside service for John Charles Papadakes of Emmetsburg was held Monday, May 22, at Evergreen Cemetery in Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

John Charles Papadakes, son of Charles John and Emily (Despinakes) Papadakes, was born July 25, 1930 in Emmetsburg. He received his education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1948. John received a scholarship to the University of Iowa to run track.

John served in the United States Army from Feb.15, 1952 until being honorably discharged on Jan. 27, 1954. He returned to Emmetsburg to help his parents operate their caf, The Candy Kitchen.

John helped care for his mother, Emily, after his father's death. He was proud of his Greek heritage and enjoyed visiting with people. John also loved caring for his cats and collecting guns.

John passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emily and Charles Papadakes; his brothers, Louis and George Papadakes; his sister, Helen Papadakes; and two nieces, Tina Rowley and Tina Pippert.

He is survived by sister-in-law, Barbara Hofstad of Emmetsburg; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
