It’s All About Community

It may not feel like Spring today, but the calendar is filling up with Springtime activities. Check out what's happening in the Palo Alto County area.

On the top of the list is Women's Day Out this Thursday. Shoppers can collect a box of chocolates when they shop at Emmetsburg retail stores. The treats sound delightful and the Grand Prize is really something special.

The Grand Prize winner and five of her friends will spent the night of June 10 at Nelson's CabInn. This little cabin has a charm that's hard to beat. Anne Marie has decorated it to fit everyone from a group of ladies on a quilting retreat to hunters who come in the Fall. And, the Grand Prize winner and friends will receive even more treats to eat from the kitchen of Joan Goodlaxson. Women's Day Out could be Women's Day In for a lucky group of six.

Next on the agenda is Simantikos Dance Chicago, presenting Deg Selv at The Shores on Saturday night. This dance troupe comes to Emmetsburg from Chicago. While we may think we don't know much about contemporary dance, we do know this is brought to us by Bev Norland's granddaughter, Haley McElwee. Haley's parents are Danny and April (Norland)?Striz from Ruthven, owners and operators of Lost Lunker Lodge on Lost Island Lake. The local ties alone are reason enough to check it out.

We have learned that Deg Selv is Norwegian for "yourself." This show will examine the difficulty in finding an balance between selflessness and selfishness through humor, emotion and movement.

Here's a bonus for area dance students:?Haley is offering a warm-up dane class with the professional company from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday. There is no cost to attend. Dance students age 11 and up are encouraged to attend.

Tickets are available in advance. Contact April Striz in Ruthven, Bev Norland in Emmetsburg, or stop by the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce Office. The performance is Saturday at 7 p.m.

The first of 12 Classics at the Riviera is Sunday, May 14, at 4:30 p.m. The first show is Singing in the Rain." Palo Alto Arts Council received grant funds to bring the classics to the big screen. Classic movies will be shown the second Sunday of each month. There is no cost to attend.

Get prepared for Fun and Wellness Day Wednesday, May 17, at Iowa Lakes Community College. This event has been going on for 30 years and still draws huge crowds.

Keynote morning speaker is Al Batt addressing "A ?Life Gone to the Birds." The afternoon keynote is Mike Piepel sharing Hollywood through its posters.

Start Fun and Wellness Day with a free health screening, then enjoy a continental breakfast and browse the display booths. Throughout the day, there will be workshops on a variety of topics - ranging from a lesson on using a smart phone to navigating Facebook; love your brain, get some tips on grocery shopping on a fixed budget, learn how to declutter your life, and get a lesson on avoiding scams. There is a workshop for everyone.

See you out and about in the merry month of May.
