How To Know You Are Getting Older

April 25, 2017
by Anesa McGregor , Emmetsburg News

At almost 53 years of age, I have never considered myself old. I can still ride a skateboard, even though some of the old tricks might cause a broken hip if I fall. I can still throw a ball, but it takes longer to warm up the arm before really throwing it. I can still hit a ball with a bat; I just can't run as fast as I use to be able to. However, this year I am feeling older than ever before. The difference this year is that my younger brother is going to be 50.

I suppose his age is how I have always gauged growing old. It's kind of like seeing your parents as always being here. With him being younger than me; it just meant I was old. Now we will both be in our 50's and our parents have passed away so it's just him and me. We have grown closer than ever.

Thinking about getting older made me think of some sayings that I have either heard someone say or have read somewhere. I wanted to share them because I think at some point we have all felt the same way. I hope you all find them as funny as I have and wonder how many you have heard or said. So here you go; you know you are old if.

You keep finding yourself saying "It wasn't like that back in my day."

You start thinking policemen, teachers and doctors are a lot younger looking these days

When your idea of lifting weights is to stand up

You complain about the rubbish on TV these days and how much better TV was in the old days. Which is ironic because most of the rubbish today is repeats of the rubbish that was on in the old days.

Your finger cramps up while scrolling down to find the year you were born

When you barely do anything all day, but still need to take a nap to continue to do barely anything

When you can remember getting through an entire day without taking a picture of anything

When you hear snap, crackle and pop at the breakfast table and you are not eating cereal

When you sink your teeth into a steak and they stay there.

You and your teeth don't sleep together

When you wake up looking lie your driver's license picture

When your address book has mostly names that start with Dr.

The pharmacist has become your best friend

I can relate to most of the above reasons I know I am getting old. But my two favorite ones are

You look for your glasses for half an hour and they were on your head the whole time, and

You say something to your kids that your mother said to you and you always hated it.

I am a firm believer in that a person is only as old as they feel and even though my younger brother is turning 50 and it makes me feel old right now; I refuse to go through the rest of my life feeling older than I do today.
