EHS Vocal Jazz Qualifies For State Championships

SIOUX?CITY - Emmetsburg High School's Vocal Jazz Experiment earned its third consecutive trip to the Iowa State Vocal Jazz Championships Monday afternoon. After submitting a video of their State Contest performance on Feb. 6, the 22-member Vocal Jazz Experiment was selected to compete in thier third State Championships in as many years of existence. A total of eight groups were selected in Class 2A for the State Championships.

"This group continues to grow and develop as musicians," noted Luke Miller, High School Vocal Music Director at Emmetsburg. "They work very hard in their rehearsals, and yet they have fun when they perform and it all comes together on stage."

Members of the Vocal Jazz Experiment are Zach Yates, , Linnea Ankeny, Wayne Barrett, Madison Olson, Connor Joyce, Shelby Loomis, Max Miller, Alli Enriquez, Austin Noll, Bailey Naig, Aaron Hutchison, Alexander Gray, Kayla Joyce, Phoenix Campbell, Natalie Ruiz, Evan Brennan, Bryar Olson, Jace Carlson, Annie Brennan, Kyle Licht, Ali Laubenthal and Matthew Hill. Ms. Holly Prier is the group's accompanist. Also accompanying the group in numbers are Kyle Licht and Alex Gray on trumpet, Max Miller on trombone and key bass, Bailey Naig on key bass, Phoenix Campbell on saxophone and Aaron Hutchison on drums.

STATE?QUALIFIERS - The Emmetsburg Vocal Jazz Experiment earned its third qualification for the Iowa High School Vocal Jazz Championships. The group of 22 vocalists, under the direction of Mr. Luke Miller, have been in existance for three years and have qualified for the State Championships each year of their existance, The State Championships will be March 28 at Valley Southwoods in West Des Moines. -- Dan Voigt photo

The Vocal Jazz Experiment began in 2015 and in that first year, won their very first competition at Sheldon and qualified for the State Vocal Jazz Championships, where they finished second.

In 2016, the Vocal Jazz Experiment qualified for the State Championships and finished second by the narrowest of margins. By earning another qualification for the State Championships, the group is aiming for the top placing this year.

The 2017 Iowa State Vocal Jazz Championships are set for Tuesday, March 28, at Valley Southwoods High School in West Des Moines.
