James D. Harvey 1927-2017

A Mass of Christian Burial for James Harvey of Ayrshire will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ayrshire. Concelebrants are the Rev. Clem Currans, the Rev. Merle Kollasch and Pastor Tim Tingblad.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Ayrshire. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Tuesday. Jan. 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Parish Vigil Service at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home in Emmetsburg.

James D. Harvey, son of Bud (Albert Lee) and Henrietta (Sherlock) Harvey, was born July 7, 1927, on a farm south of Graettinger. In 1932, Jim's family moved near Ayrshire and he attended school. He completed his high school education at Silver Lake Consolidated School.

In July 1945 Jim enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during World War II, on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bunker Hill, CV17 where he was number one throttle man. After being honorably discharged, Jim returned to Palo Alto County where he farmed near Ayrshire.

On Dec. 26, 1953, Jim was united in marriage to Janet Kibbie at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ayrshire.

Jim farmed, raised livestock and was a renowned Auctioneer. Jim also did crop insurance adjusting and real estate appraisals. Jim was active in auctioneering most of his life. He sold farm sales, livestock sales, real estate and household auctions throughout northwest Iowa and in other parts of the country.

Jim was an active member of the Catholic Church. He was also active in the Ayrshire American Legion and had just received an award this year for 70 years of consecutive service.

Jim passed away Thursday, Jan. 26, 2107, at the Ruthven Community Care Center, after battling cancer since 2002. He had resided at the Ruthven Assisted Living for the past year. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Henrietta; his wife, Janet; daughter, Teri Harvey; his brothers, Dan Harvey and Ken Harvey; and a sister, Dorothy Carpenter.

He is survived by his children, Sandy Giffin and her husband, Alan of Kingwood, TX and Bill Harvey and his wife, Vicki of Champlin, MN; grandchildren, Derek Giffin, Jamie Giffin, Erin Harvey, Brennan Harvey, Jessi Harvey, and Kendall Harvey; foster son, Jeff Wilson and his wife, Gayle of Mt. Sterling, IL; brother, Richard Harvey and his wife, Karen of Athens, OH.
