Margaret E. Thompson 1920-2017

Funeral service for Margaret E.?Thompson of Emmetsburg will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew. The Rev David Moore and the Rev. Dirk Ailts will officiate.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.

Margaret Elizabeth Gowans, daughter of Henry James and Helga (Juhl)?Gowans, was born Dec. 4, 1920, on her family farm north of Depew. She attended Country School near Depew and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1938.

Peg, as she was known to her family and friends, completed Normal Training classes so that she could teach school. She taught Country School for a few years prior to her marriage.

On May 21, 1944, Peg was united in marriage to Lyle "Red" Thompson at the Gowans' home near Depew. To this union three children were born.

Peg and Red farmed near Depew where Peg was active as a farm wife and mother. She was a devoted member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew.

Peg remained on the farm until 2011 when she moved to Emmetsburg and made her home at Lakeside Lutheran Home.

Peg passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at Lakeside Lutheran Home, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Monte Thompson; three brothers, John Gowans, Robert Gowans and William Gowans; and an infant sister, Dorothea Jean Gowans.

She is survived by a daughter, Christy (Dave)?White of Emmetsburg, and a son, Jim (Cindy)?Thompson of Cylinder; six grandchildren:?Scott Thompson, Heidi Krause, Jamie Gavle, Brett Thompson, Josh White and Ryan White; seven great grandchildren:?Tyler Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Shelby Krause, Austin Krause, Maggie Gavle, Elise Gavle and Declan White; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
