New Beginnings

December 29, 2016
by Anesa McGregor , Emmetsburg News

All the hype and build up of Christmas is over and New Year's Eve is coming fast. So, are you ready for it?

The New Year begins as an empty slate with incalculable possibilities and hope for what the New Year can bring. As Henry Ward Beecher wrote in 1882, "Every man should be born again on the first of January."

Soon we will be bombarded with activities, promises and commitments, work, play friends and family. We will be going several directions at one time, never having enough time for any one thing. Always wondering where time has gone and which way to turn next.

Most people seem to bypass New Year's resolutions. We have found them either impossible to keep or to trivial to bother with. Aren't we always trying to do better anyway?

There is something about the new year that can be inspiring to all of us. It is the ideal time for all of us to make necessary and beneficial changes in our lives. A new calendar year can be as powerful as a new job, a new relationship or a new home to set us o the path needed to improve those areas of our lives that need a boost.

It is a good time to leave harmful patterns in the past, to release grudges and forgive those we've found it hard to forgive and move on. The new year is also a good time to do those things that scare us the most.

The new year is a time when we hope to see progress as we grow as people. A time when we can see past differences and come together, untied as one to better mankind and us. To look to the future as see all that is possible and reach for the stars.

This new year will see a changing of the guard, so to speak, with a new President and cabinet being sworn in. This could be a new beginning for our country as well. It is a time to give people the chance to reach their goals and beyond without criticism or negative opinion clouding our judgment. It is a time to forge new alliances and renew old friendships that have been forgotten in past years.

The new year is a time to reconnect with family and strengthen the bonds that bind us together as a unit. To tell those who are important to us just how we feel and how much they mean to our lives.

The new year will bring many changes, as every year does. Though change can be a challenge, it is a necessary part of our daily lives. It is best to face them head on and not cling to the comforts of the past. Memories are simple that, a time to think back with fondness and love. We can use our memories of the past to help us attain our goals for the new year.

One thing I have learned is that new beginnings are valuable and precious. They are not something to be squandered frivolously away. It is an opportunity to reinvent who and what you are. To correct mistakes you have made and improve on the strides of accomplishment in our lives.

A new beginning is valuable. Let's not waste it.
