Lavonne Sterba 1939-2016

A Mass of Christian Burial for Lavonne A. Sterba of Emmetsburg will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Celebrant is the Rev. Clem Currans.

Interment is in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 17, at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. A CD of A Rosary will be said at 10 a.m.

Lavonne Arlene Sterba, daughter of Rudolph and Margaret (Myers) Sterba, was born Oct. 19, 1939 in Emmetsburg. She attended school at Emmetsburg Catholic School, graduating in 1958. While in grade school, Lavonne did domestic work for the Tom Kelly family and then during her high school years she was employed by the Joe Hand family. After graduation, Lavonne worked at McNally's Caf.

Lavonne worked at the Auditor's Office at the Palo Alto County Courthouse. She later worked for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in the Division of Soil Conservation. She began her employed there in September 1961 and retired in February 2000. She was a very loyal and dedicated employee and enjoyed her friends that she worked with. Lavonne was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Soil Conservation Commissioners.

Lavonne was an active and faithful member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg as well as the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Lavonne was the fifth born child in a family of seven children. Her siblings included Merle Sterba, Delores Peterson, Richard Sterba, Ronald Sterba, Beverly Holst and Sharon Sterba.

Lavonne passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 77.

Lavonne was a kind hearted lady that is very willing to help others. She had a strong faith and this was shown by her kindness to others.
