Russell R. Smith 1922-2016

Funeral service for Russell Smith of Emmetsburg was Monday, Dec. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg, with the Joyce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Russell Raymond Smith, son of Bruce and Martha (Doege) Smith was born Nov. 24, 1922 in Grant Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. He attended country schools near Woden, Thompson and Scarville, IA.

Russell worked on a farm after his education before joining the United States Army in 1943. He served as a medic in the 41st Rainbow Division of the 205th Artillery Unit in the Pacific Theater under General McArthur. Russell served for one and a half years in New Guinea where he contracted colitis. He spent two months in the hospital before being discharged, having been a sharpshooter and earning a bronze star.

On Feb. 21, 1945, Russell was united in marriage to Verle Steven in Minnesota. The couple made their home on a farm east of Graettinger where they raised their son, Ken. Russell took mechanic classes and began working in Emmetsburg at the Ford garage where he was the head mechanic for over 40 years.

Russell enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and motorcycle rides. He liked to watch western movies, have coffee with friends at Jensvold Motor Company and more than anything, he loved spending time with his family.

On Dec. 6, 2016, Russell passed away at Sanford Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD. He was 94.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verle; three brothers: Bruce Smith, Jr., Harold Smith and Burnell Smith; two brothers-in-law: Grant Langfald and Russell Dann.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Ken (Marsha) of Emmetsburg; grand- son, Bjay Smith (Michelle) of Ringsted; two great-grandsons: Garrett and Matthew; brother, Donald Smith (Janice) of Sun City, AZ; two sisters: Darlene Langfald of Emmons, MN and Marjorie Dann of Albert Lea, MN; four sisters-in-law: Lillian Smith of Northwood, Donnabelle Smith of Ankeny, Delores Stroud of Graettinger and Dorothy Smith of Aurora, OR.
