Marvel M. Davis 1915-2016

Funeral service for Marvel M. Davis of Emmetsburg will b held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Louie Q. Gallo, First United Methodist Church, Emmetsburg, will officiate.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Marvel Mae (Melcher) Davis was born Jan. 9, 1915 in Platte, SD, the daughter of Warren and Eva (Schoenrock) Melcher. She graduated from Platte High School in 1932. She later attended Emmetsburg Junior College, graduating in 1956 and completed her college education at Drake University, graduating in 1965.

On Dec. 31, 1939 Marvel Melcher and Robert Davis were married in Marion, SD. They lived in Mitchell, where Mrs. Davis worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as Service Assistant and a Toll Instructor until they moved to Emmetsburg in 1952. Marvel was then employed at the General Telephone Company for two years.

Marvel taught fourth grade in Ayrshire, Cylinder and Emmetsburg for a total of 22 years. She was a substitute teacher for several years after she retired in 1978. Marvel and her husband spent the winters in Mesa, AZ for a number of years.

Marvel was a member of the United Methodist Church and UMW, American Association of University Women, Fortnightly Club, Emmetsburg Country Club, Sewing Club, Palo Alto County Arts Council and the Retired Teachers Group. She was also a past member of Eastern Star (Esther Chapter No. 111), and the Ladies Golf Association.

Marvel passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 101. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert in 1992; her brothers, Herschel and Cecil Melcher; and her sister, Muriel Reding.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, Tom and Sheila Reding of Sioux Falls, SD, Dick and Noreen Reding of Shakopee, MN, Beverly Pennington of Platte, SD and Warren and Dorothy Melcher of Murdo, SD; as well as other relatives and friends.
