October -- Here We Come

September 27, 2016
Emmetsburg News

Where did September go? It seems like yesterday when students returned to school and already the month has flown and we are looking at homecoming right around the corner.

But first

KEMB-LP is bringing a first to Emmetsburg - a home brew contest and beer sampling and entertainment. It's this weekend.

"Keep 'Em Brewing" is Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds. The beer garden opens at 3 p.m. Craft beer sampling with Doll Distribution is from 3 to 5 p.m.

Entertainers are TV and the Beller'd Yellers, plus music by Big Nacho Karaoke. Sounds like fun.

The day will be highlighted with the "People's Choice"?Homebrew Tasting. Even those of us who don't normally drink beer will have to have a sip or two. We'll see you there!

The number of home brewers is growing. Last week, I visited the gardens at the home of Dawn and Pat Corley. One of Dawn's crops is hops. She grows them on a trellis on the back of the garage. This crop of hops is for her sons, who are home brewers. When I toured the gardens, the hops had already been harvested and dried. Dawn explained the process, noting that the hops are dried on screens after they are picked from the vine. She packages them and gives them to her boys for homebrew.

Will the Corley brothers be at the brew contest this weekend? Dawn says probably not, and that might be a good thing for the other competitors. Dawn said that son Matt took three of his beers to the Iowa State Fair a couple of years ago and came away with third place on each.

Next on the October agenda is EHS?Homecoming and all of the festivities that go along with the week.

Friday, Oct. 7, Emmetsburg Chamber members will be hitting the streets for the annual Homecoming Tailgate Party. This is a much anticipated event and the variety and creativity of tailgate vendors is overwhelming. Kids of all ages walk from spot to spot, eating their way down Broadway. Chamber Director Deb Hite is getting the Tailgate Party well organized.

Highlight of the afternoon is the Homecoming Parade. Cap off the day with the Homecoming football game. This year the E-Hawks will be up against Alta-Aurelia.

That's just the first week of October. Imagine what the rest of the month holds.

Soon we will be pulling the beautiful pink petunias from the downtown pots and replacing them with spruce tips that last through the winter months. We're getting a taste of cooler weather right now, but have faith - we may be blessed with some Indian summer days as we move into October.
