Get Happy!

September 15, 2016
by Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

All sorts of trivia crosses my desk any given day, especially on e-mail. A lot of information is unsolicited and most of it gets trashed. But every now and then there is an interesting little tidbit. For instance:

Iowa is the seventh happiest state in the nation. This comes courtesy of WalletHub, who provides numerous studies every week.

With research proving that money can contribute to happiness - at least, up to a certain dollar amount - the personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016's Happiest States in America.

To find the states that are home to the happiest Americans, WalletHub's analysts compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 28 key metrics. Their data set ranges from emotional health to income level to sports participation rate.

Here is what the report had to say about Iowa:

Happiness in Iowa (1=Best; 25=Average)

19th Hedonometer Ranking

23rd Depression Rate

6th Adequate-Sleep Rate

15th Suicide Rate

3rd Long-Term Unemployment Rate

9th Volunteerism Rate

7th Divorce Rate

10th Safety Ranking

8th Income Growth Rate

To get the full report, one had to "click," but somehow Iowa ended up the seventh happiest state in the nation.

Then I had to look up hedonometer. Wikipedia says it is a device used to gauge happiness or pleasure and it was conceived of at least as early as 1880. Now we know.

So what makes you happy?

Let's start with: "Happiness is a warm summer day" and build from there.

Happiness is watching the birds fly and the bees buzz. It's as simple as that.

Happiness is having a roof over your head and food on your table. Sometimes it's not simple, but complicated.

Happiness is family. Today families are scattered to every corner of the United States and/or the world. Technology makes it easier to stay in touch, to "see" one another or at least send "on-the-spot" photos.?It makes you feel connected ... and happy.

Happiness is a sense of community. We help one another. That is evidenced by the Feed Our Kids Emmetsburg program and Then Feed Just One packing day. We are caring people ... and that makes us happy.

Take a look at the bright changes in our community. Through the process, we strive for middle ground by compromise as we watch our community grow. We work together to make decisions that will benefit ourselves and future generations ... and that makes us happy,

Enjoy the day ... and be happy.
