Emmetsburg News

To the Editor:

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Palo Alto County Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce will host a public forum on Wind Energy Conversion Systems for Palo Alto County. The event will be held at the VFW Hall in Emmetsburg.

Topics to be addressed include:

---What wind energy projects are under consideration?

---What are the tax and other economic benefits to Palo Alto County of the proposed systems?

---What restrictions or conditions (number of devices, setbacks, etc.) should be placed on industry in a Palo Alto County Wind Energy Systems Ordinance?

---And many more.

The speakers will include: Joe Neary, Palo Alto County Zoning Administrator, Daniel Lutat, the Director of Sustainable Energy Resources and Technologies Programs, Iowa Lakes Community College, and industry representatives from Invenergy, Mid American Energy Company, and RES (Renewable Energy Systems) Americas.

County Supervisors have been invited to share their views.

Industry representatives are updating the Palo Alto County Supervisors on the proposed projects. This event will give the citizens of Palo Alto County an opportunity to be provided the same information given to the Supervisors so that the citizens may make their own decisions on the projects.

After presentations by the speakers, attendees will be permitted to ask questions and to make statements, including comments in support of the projects or in opposition to them. County Supervisor contact information will be provided to all attendees to facilitate sharing positions with the supervisors.

VFW and Emmetsburg Chamber are sponsoring this informational public forum as a community service to assist the public with understanding the details regarding the proposals for Palo Alto County. If you have questions about this event, please contact Dennis Mandsager at dennis.mand or (712) 298-4605 or Deb Hite, Executive Director of Emmetsburg Chamber at eburgcham or (712) 852-2283.

The draft Palo Alto County Wind Energy Conversion Systems Ordinance is not yet available on the County website. I will do my best to obtain a copy, and, if successful, I will make it available to anyone who contacts me by email.
