Back to School Safety Tips

August 25, 2016
by Anesa McGregor , Emmetsburg News

Our area kids are back in school and it has been three short months since they got out for the summer. For many of us three months is long enough to forget some simple safety tips for going to school:

Get to the bus stop five minutes early and stay at least five giant steps away from the curb while waiting.

Never run after a bus.

Stay seated when the school bus is moving.

Talk quietly so you do not distract the driver.

Always stop and look both directions at least twice before crossing a road.

Only cross a road at an intersection or crosswalk.

When riding a bicycle, stop before crossing a road and walk your bike across.

Wear a helmet when riding a bike.

Know hand signals

Drivers also need to practice safety precautions this time of year.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Watch for little ones darting from behind or between cars.

Be ready to stop when following a bus.

Never pass a school buss that has flashing red lights and a stop sign.

Watch for school crossings in towns.

Here is something that I never had to worry about like we do today, posting pictures on social media. There are a few things that can be done to help keep our kids safe from those who wish to harm them:

If you post a photo on social media, do not supply any identifying information, no names, school names or anything else that could help identify anyone or anything in the photo.

Keep your social media accounts as secure as possible.

Turn off location services for phones.

We all know that the world has changed over the years and what was once thought to be safe is no longer. By using a few safety tips and common sense, your child can have a wonderful first few days back to school.
