The First Year

July 6, 2016
by Anesa McGregor , Emmetsburg News

The end of June marked a milestone for me, I have been with the paper for one year. It seems like just yesterday I was writing this editorial on my first six months. A new chapter in life began for me a year ago. Looking for a job and being hired with no formal training, made me especially determined to give it my best. Wanting to prove to myself as well as a few others, that a person really can do anything they put their mind to.

It has been an amazing year filled with new learning experiences, with some mistakes along the way. I feel that if a person does not make a mistake every now and then, they really are not trying their best. It has been a mind-blowing year and I continue to be impressed and astounded at the consistent level of excellence, commitment and talent that the staff displays daily.

Learning to write for a newspaper is something totally different. It's not like sitting down to write a report or a letter. Subjective writing about my own opinions is a lot easier than writing news. It can be hard at times to try and detach myself from an issue so my feelings do not creep into the article is not as easy as it sounds. I have tried hard to be objective and have gotten a lot of pointers and good advice from Jane Whitmore and Dan Voigt in doing so. Many of the tips and hints that they have shared would not be found in a textbook or learned in a classroom. What they bring to Emmetsburg Publishing comes from experience over the years. Together, they have close to 60 years of experience in the newspaper business and have probably forgotten more things than I will learn, but it's fun to pick their brains for information. They are a treasure trove of information to tap into. Maybe I'm old schooled but to me experience is more important than a formal education in some areas, hands on learning is a great way to remember things.

Everyday, I am learning something new, doing something different or going somewhere I have never been before. I understand more about what the County Supervisors deal with in the position they are in. It's obvious that no one can please everybody all the time, but they try to be fair and impartial when making decisions. And the subject of drainage is almost overwhelming. I never knew a thing before but I can sure tell you things now.

Finally, I want to say "Thank You" to all the staff at Emmetsburg Publishing and to all who read the paper and I am looking forward to many, many more years writing news for the Emmetsburg area.
