by Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

Have you always wanted to start your own business? Have we got a deal for you!

Dream to Reality!

If you have a dream of having your own business, now is the time to make your dream come true. Those who have dreamed of owning and operating a retail businesses or a food-based business are encouraged to check out this contest.

Entrepreneurs are required to develop a business plan and present it with an application form. A panel of five judges will review the submitted applications.

The entrepreneurs with the most sound business plans will be required to give a 15-minute presentation about their business concept, followed by 15-minutes of questions from the panel of judges.

The entries will be judged on, but not limited to: business plan, presentation, number of employees, and uniqueness to the city of Emmetsburg.

Here's the key: This new business must make a three-year commitment. In exchange, the prize winner receives:

$10,000 cash prize (drawdown method of eligible expenses, invoices to set up a business)

One year free rent (up to $500 per month for four months each year for three years - and the Chamber is working with building owners in town)

One year Chamber Membership

One year of Brand Builders ads in the Emmetsburg newspapers and shopper

One year Chamber Roll-up ad

One year KEMB-LP/Chamber TV Sports &?Activities sponsorship package

Business Professional Mentoring

Who could ask for more?

Even though there will be only one grand prize winner, the Chamber and mentors will work with people who do not get the big prize, too. The idea is to bring new business to town, which is what the Chamber is all about.

This is an Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce event. The Chamber Board received a matching funds grant from Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation to bring this contest to the public. The 25-percent matching funds came from RAGBRAI proceeds.

"Because the community worked so hard during RAGBRAI, the Chamber thought this is one way we could give back to the community," said Chamber Director Deb Hite.

The kick-off meeting for aspiring business owners is next week, Wednesday, April 27. Participants will meet in the evening at Iowa Lakes for those who want to develop a business plan. Deb Hite has all of the information you need, plus application forms, at the Chamber Office. Deadline to enter is July 1.

We can't wait to see whose dream will become a reality in Emmetsburg's business district.
