Spring Has Sprung

You must have noticed by now just how much more light there is. The days are getting longer and longer giving us plenty of time to come home from work or school and be outside doing whatever. Although the weather so far has not been the best, soon there will be no excuse to not work or play outside. This truly is a magical time of the year; daylight increases and the warmth from sun makes everything want to jump for joy.

I remember an old rhyme from my childhood:

Spring has sprung

The grass has riz

I wonder where

The birdie is.

I never understood this until I got older.

Spring is the season of new beginnings. Fresh buds bloom and animals awaken. The earth seems to come to life again after the long winter. Farmers and gardeners plant their seeds, and the temperatures slowly rise.

Animals that spent winter in hibernation come out, while those that went south come back as the temperature rises. Soon, the first buds on the trees will be evident and the grass will slowly start turning green. Squirrels and rabbits will begin to fatten up on new sprigs of grass. Deer will have their babies and begin teaching them survival in the world of animals and man. Birds that flew south for the winter will slowly return to brighten our day with their song. Then for me the worst, the snakes come out. The only part of spring I regret is the day this happens and it never fails, I always seem to find the first one, or maybe it is the other way around. But, it is truly all part of the circle of the seasons and I suppose they have a special part in the springtime also.

We will all beginning to spend more and more time outside and our demeanor will begin to change. Gone will be the harsh, snappy words replaced by happy, gentle words of kindness and understanding. Gone are the layers of clothing and boots needed to stay warm, replaced with shorts, short sleeve shirts and sandals.

I for one look forward to spring. Although I love snow and blizzards, I do tire of the season and look forward with anticipation to new life and new beginnings. I relish in expectation of putting away the heavy winter clothing and getting out the summer items. I am especially eager to go bare foot.

We all look at spring in a different way and yet the outcome is always the same, the replacement of old with the new. Enjoy this time of the year. Get out and take a look around you. See how the world changes with the seasons and be glad we live where we actually have the opportunity to see the changes.
