Six Months Later

by Anesa McGregor , Emmetsburg News

Being a local girl, I know many in the county. Growing up in Ayrshire and working in Emmetsburg has given me the opportunity to at least recognize the face even if I can't put a name to it. So where am I going with this?

Well, six months ago I began a new venture with the Emmetsburg Publishing. When I say new, I mean I had never done anything like this before, ever!

For 35 years, my work history consisted of customer service, whether at Alco, Kmart, Wal-Mart, , you can see where this goes. I have always worked in retail, which is a good field to work in. You get an understanding of what makes people upset or happy with the service given to them. I was always able to take my personal experiences shopping and use them in the work I did. The idea was to become better at giving customer service and not make mistakes others made. I like to think it worked and that I became good at what I did.

Although customer service is used to a degree with publishing, it's more about being able to write articles and stories people can understand. It's being able to initiate a response with only the written word. The extent of my writing experience - college papers. That's it, nothing else in my work history gave me any skills other than the ability to listen and understand what was said.

Everyone at Emmetsburg Publishing has taken me under his or her wing. The support system at work is second to none. Questions are answered and explained without making one feel bad for asking, especially if it's the same question over again.

Tracy and Marsha have been wonderful regarding advertising. It's not my area, but the basics are always nice to understand. Jane has explained writing in general. Being able to tell a story and making it interesting for the reader is not as easy as it sounds. Dan V. is a terrific teacher in all areas. He has shared his knowledge in publishing and photography with me so that I am comfortable taking pictures and knowing what is important for an article. Linda is knowledgeable in so many areas. She is always willing to take time and explain even when she is busy. Finally, Dan M., he has given me support and confidence to be able to undertake a job that I was unsure of being able to do.

The staff at Emmetsburg Publishing are some of the nicest, friendliest and most helpful people I have ever worked with. I look forward to continue learning the newspaper field becoming more knowledgeable and familiar with all aspects and especially becoming a better writer. So I would just like to take this opportunity to say "Thank You to everyone at Emmetsburg Publishing for all the support and help you have all given to me in the first six months and look forward to continued learning in the future."
