Where Did The Year Go?

January 4, 2016

I was thinking the other day about something to write about and thought, "Where Did the Year Go?" I catch myself saying similar things during conversations with people but this was the first time I really thought about what I was saying. I'm really starting to sound like my mother.

Remembering years past, I can still hear Mom saying, "Where did the time go?" or "I can't believe Christmas is here already." As a child, I never understood what she meant or why when I wished for birthdays and Christmas she would say, "Don't wish your life away."

As children, time seems to be eternal. We will always be young and play and have fun. Life is just on continuous joyride that never seems to end. Summers, although they seem to fly by, are filled with wonders of exploring uncharted territory and playing with siblings and friends until dusk.

Some of us had birthdays to celebrate, but we all had Memorial Day and Fourth of July. We looked forward to Labor Day, only because it was a long weekend out of school, May, June and July we days of doing what we enjoyed most. We didn't worry about tomorrow because tomorrow was the same as yesterday. A look into the future was what we would do for the weekend, if we even thought that far ahead. We were kids, why would we worry about what the future would bring.

But those sayings always stuck in my head, "Where did the time go?" or "Time flies when you're having fun." These words have remained a constant reminder of people I looked up to and respected, even if I didn't understand.

Well, now it's some 40 years later and I finally understand. As children, we have no concept of what time really means. Everyday is a new adventure and we can't wait for the next day and something new to come along. Wishing for days to pass and holidays to come does seem like wishing ones life away, but as children, we don't care. We don't care about Thanksgiving, but we know Christmas is on its way and we can't wait. We don't care about the New Year that is coming, but Easter vacation is just around the corner and after that school's out for the summer. It all seems to take forever when we are young.

But, where did the time go this year? It seems like Thanksgiving was only yesterday and it doesn't feel like I have been working for the paper six months already. It doesn't seem right saying "Merry Christmas" to someone because it doesn't seem like it should be December, much less Christmas.

Although it seems like time flies by the older you get, I know it really doesn't. We live in a fast paced era that doesn't give us a lot of time to stop and enjoy life the way we once did as children. That's something we all need to make a priority gong forward: Stop and take the time to enjoy the simple things in life, taking the time to become children once again even if only for a brief time.
