Home For The Holidays

December 3, 2015
by Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

"Home for the Holidays" Beginning with Thanksgiving, families gather together through Christmas. What a warm feeling.

Our extended family enjoyed Thanksgiving together. We laughed, we ate great food, we played cribbage, we remembered days gone by and we remembered family that could not attend. It's' all about family.

Saturday after Thanksgiving, we co-hosted Breakfast With Santa. Each year we see entire families gather at the Pizza Ranch, ready to greet Santa Claus for the first time of the season. They laugh, they enjoy a breakfast snack, they play games and they remember previous years visiting Santa. It's all about family.

This Friday the Emmetsburg Retail Association will host the lighted parade and open house at the fire hall. Families will bundle up to stand out in the cold and watch the parade of lighted floats. Then they will make their way to the fire hall to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, listen to music of the season and visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Families will meet their friends at this annual event and take the time to visit. It's all about family.

There are many social events of the season, kicked off Thanksgiving weekend and continuing until the end of the year. Add a little snow and the whole scene becomes a magical winter wonderland.

What will you be doing this weekend? There is a whole lineup of events to enjoy in Emmetsburg.

Friday afternoon, visit Emmetsburg Retail Association businesses for a taste of soup from 4 to 6 p.m. How many different kinds of soup can you taste in those two hours? Sounds like a yummy adventure, to be sure.

At 6 p.m. the lighted parade begins. Floats will be coming from North Broadway and travel south. Last year there were 18 lighted floats. How many will there be this year? This event seems to grow every year.

The Emmetsburg Fire Hall will once again be the hub of activities. Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit with all the children while their parents take pictures. Members of Pony Express will give rides around the Courthouse Square in a horse-drawn wagon. Hannah Bird will join Biblical Brass and Beyond to provide sounds of the season. There is some serious talent in this group. There will be hot chocolate and treats for everyone. And, there will be drawings for prizes.

While you are out and about, shopping locally, be sure to register to win a Teddy Bear. Each week some one will take home one of these cuddly bears. There is a big, white bear, too, that needs a good home.

The fun doesn't stop there. Each week, Emmetsburg Retail Association members offer special deals to shoppers who have an ERA button. Check the list and see where you need to shop. Deals change each week. ERA merchants have lots of surprises for shoppers, so enjoy supporting your friends at their businesses. We're all one big, happy family.
