West Elementary Staff Says “Thank You”

September 24, 2015
Emmetsburg News

To The Editor:

We would like to say thank you to the three outgoing Emmetsburg Community School District Board Members (Rick Brennan, Kathy Roethler and BJ Schany) as well as to the four remaining members. Thank you for your dedicated service to our school and community! We, the teachers and staff at West Elementary, appreciate all you have done to help upgrade the facilities at West Elementary. We are grateful for having classrooms for all of our teachers and support personnel to be able to meet the needs of our students. We now have a devoted room for our Title 1 students to receive the 1 to 1 and small group instruction that they need rather than being tucked away in the corner of the Library. Our At Risk students and staff no longer have to search for open rooms and hall space. Our EXL program used to use the hallway for instruction, they now have a room that they can meet in daily! This is much better than having teachers and students meeting in hallways and entryways! We are now able to send our students to physical education classes in a gymnasium that is built to safely house 30+ active students at time. We have a beautiful library where students can engage and listen to stories without the competition of noise from a small group of Title students working in a corner. We also have a lunchroom that allows the needed space for many students to have time to eat their lunch.

Many of the staff who work at West Elementary are also parents of students who are currently attending, have attended or will attend the Emmetsburg Community School District. (Several employees have even opted to open enroll their children into our district). We also want to thank you for making the needed changes to the High School and Middle School facilities. It is comforting to know our high school gymnasium is now handicap accessible and much safer for our youngest to oldest fans!

To our newly elected board members, as well as the current members, we look forward to working with you and invite you to come visit at West Elementary! We have wonderful things happening! We would also like you to know how much of our own time and money we have invested in our classrooms and students. Many teachers have written grants to purchase materials for their classrooms through programs such as Donors Choose and have spent their own hard-earned money for needed supplies. Drive by the school building on a weekend, in the evening or during the summer and you will see many teachers working on their own time to provide what's best to meet our students' and families' needs.

Our PIE (Partners In Education) group, which is made up of parents and educators, continue to support us through their fundraising efforts. Some ways they have helped students and families at West Elementary include: building a new playground at West Elementary; providing field trips to all of our students; increasing our technology opportunities by purchasing SMARTBoards and other materials for our classrooms; providing materials for initiatives such as, Family Literacy Nights, Muffins for Moms and Donuts for Dads; providing books to all students at West Elementary. We also have teachers who give their time to volunteer for countless community organizations and initiatives.
