Looking To The Future

July 7, 2015
Emmetsburg News

To Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters or just acquaintances:

Recently some things have come to light for myself, and it bothers me.

Almost two weeks ago I saw some kids messing around near my business. I yelled at them from across a field and they took off. No big deal, right not so.

About 15 minutes later, upon inspection, I realized they had tried to break into my building. While law enforcement was there, we heard them throwing rocks at equipment at a nearby gravel pit. Come to find out, they broke all the windows out of that piece of equipment.

I have heard of several instances of bikes being stolen, spare change, cigarettes and other items taken from cars. This, to me, has "kids" written all over it.

I have no children of my own. I try to spend as much time with my grandchildren and great nieces and nephews as I possibly can.

So my challenge to you is this.

Make it a point to talk to your kids, find out what they are doing, who they are hanging around with. Have a designated family night, that everyone in the family does something together. When I was young, we all ate together. As far as I know there is no better place to talk over what happened in their day than the supper table. I know with the hectic schedules these days it is hard to do. But what price do you put on your child's future?

This responsibility not only lies on the shoulder of parents, it lies on relatives, friends and on the whole community. If you know of a child that is having a hard time, talk to their parents. Let's be positive role models for these kids. Let's all help get these kids back on the right path. The alternative is not so bright.

In summation, I ask that as a community we take some time and become actively involved in the lives of our youth. Even if it is to wave and give a smile, or say have a good day, a day of fishing or just hanging out. The results may surprise you.

Remember, the RESPONSIBILITY IS OURS!
