“Go For It!” St. Pat’s Organization

February 24, 2015
Emmetsburg News

To the Editor:

I recently heard that St. Pat's organization is planning on having a beer garden on Friday and Saturday nights until 10 p.m. for our St. Pat's celebration. For years, when Mike and I were working with the organization we attempted to do have one, but the cost was too much. I am thrilled to know it is now happening.

I also hear that some of the local businesses are upset because of this decision and concerned of the revenue it will deflect from them. I would like to put in my 2cents worth!

Normally in November of the previous year, St. Pat's with just a few people who volunteer their time and talents start the task of putting this all together. Their biggest task is recruiting the talents and the money for the parade, which costs thousands of dollars, Brian Boru and others do NOT come cheap, the Shamrock pageant, radio and newspaper advertising and our visiting Irish Dignitary, all cost money. There are only a few ways for St. Pat's to collect this money. The money collected for entrance to the Shamrock pageants, businesses and individuals that are sponsors of St. Pat's and the retail store, do not always cover the costs. This is an event that brings in thousands of people and revenue to our community. I have heard stories of how Mick Conlon took out a personal loan one year to make sure the event happened.

So, when St. Pat's finds a new revenue of income to support putting on this event I say, "GO FOR IT!"
