What Is Our Heritage?

January 29, 2015
Emmetsburg News

To the Editor:

On January 16 I made a trip to Fort Dodge for my annual checkup at the VA Veterans clinic. I was dismayed and disheartened to see all the snowdrifts in the ditches and in the fields that had a black covering from the adjacent fields. I remember well the St. Patrick's Day weekend in 1968 when the dust storms were such that it required driving with your headlights on in the daytime, and the road ditches were filled with blow dirt, and the dust penetrated into our home. I hope that we do not experience such an event again. In viewing all the black fields as you drive through the country, it is possible that we may do so.

There has been much effort in stressing our "heritage" in the past years. We have a heritage center in Emmetsburg as do a lot of other towns. These are meant to preserve things from the past so that the present generation can enjoy them.

I feel that the biggest "heritage" we have is our valuable farm land which we inherited from our forefathers. This is the most true heritage.
