Reader Considers Us “Lucky”

To the Editor:

On December 15, 2014, my wife and I went to the Palo Alto County Hospital to check out some problems she was having. I had called Carolyn Lowman, and she was kind enough to rearrange schedules so that we could get in to see a doctor or physician's assistant that morning. I will be eternally grateful to her.

We saw Amy Frields, and she did some tests and basically, long story short, she informed us that we needed to make a decision because Sue needed to go somewhere immediately. I asked if I had a couple hours to let her know, and she replied, no, it needed to be decided now. As a result, the decision was made at that time to go to the Mayo Clinic.

But for Carolyn Lowman and Amy Frields, we probably would not have been able to get in to see someone in the know at that point in time. We are very fortunate to have a hospital with staff the caliber of the staff at the Palo Alto County Hospital. They did not try to second-guess or keep Sue there for treatment, they realized that she needed someone with expertise, or a facility with expertise to handle her situation. To put it bluntly, they were right on the money with their diagnosis, in fact, the Mayo Clinic confirmed what the concerns were at the Palo Alto County Hospital doing the same tests and asking the same questions.

Zeline Gappa and my daughter, Stephanie, were instrumental in making sure that we got to the hospital and got the appropriate treatment for my wife.

Once again, we are very fortunate to have a hospital and staff the caliber of Palo Alto County Hospital in a small county in a small town in Iowa.

Yours very truly,
