Stand Up And Be Heard -- Be There

Emmetsburg News

Letter to the Editor:

A newsworthy event occurred last Thursday evening when a standing-room only crowd of neighbors gathered at the VFW to participate in a Forum sponsored by a newly-formed organization called Citizens for Responsible Government (CRG). The attendees included a wide mix of Emmetsburg citizens, including 3 councilmen, who listened attentively to a presentation by Pete Hamilton and Mike Scott, major players in the CRG group. The topics included property taxes, utility rates, street assessments, economic growth, and a number of other items of general interest. An anonymous survey asking about topics for future forum discussions was distributed. The response to the evening was positive and, I believe, well received.

I am a big believer in community participation. I also believe that if you question something, or don't like something, you have an obligation to speak up or hold your peace. It was exciting and energizing to see so many people come out to hear what CRG is all about and what we as individuals can do to help Emmetsburg be the very best home town it can be!

If we want input into how our tax dollars are spent, or what to do to reduce our tax burden so that people are eager to come live here, if we don't like the street assessment concept, if we want to understand what drives our utility rates and how to conserve precious energy, if we want to continue to care for our beautiful 5 Island Lake with responsible dredging, if we honestly want EHawk PRIDE to be our mantra, then we have to STAND UP, BE HEARD, and BE THERE! City Council can ONLY represent us if they KNOW what we want, what we care about, and what we think are priorities. City Council meets the 2nd and 4th Monday (6PM) of each month, EMU meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday (7AM!) of each month. Please come listen, learn, ask questions, offer input and show those who volunteer their time and energy that we appreciate their efforts. That's what makes us A GREAT COMMUNITY!

There are a number of other Boards and Committees that would welcome new energy and talent. Kim Kibbie has said anyone interested in serving on a Board or Committee should call her at City Hall (712-852-4030) and submit their name for now or future consideration.

CRG would like to be a spark plug for ideas and information. As a group, we meet the 2nd and 4th Tues of each month at 5pm at the Wellness Center. We all benefit when we work together toward common goals with a focus on positive results. We share a vested interest in the future health, wealth and wellbeing of OUR TOWN! You're invited, come join us!
