Three exceptional Iowa Lakes students are the recipients of the Kibbie Outstanding Service Award.

The John P. "Jack" Kibbie Outstanding Service Award is presented annually to those students who exemplify the spirit of service to the college community. Faculty and staff nominate students for this award and Iowa Lakes Trustee members select recipients.

This is one of the highest honors at the college and is conferred in the spirit of keeping the 'light of service to others' burning brightly in Iowa Lakes students. The name of the award is in honor of former Sen. Jack Kibbie, frequently referred to as "The Father of Iowa Community Colleges," because he introduced legislation in 1965 to begin community colleges in Iowa. Sen. Kibbie served in the state legislature for 28 years four years as a Representative and 24 years as a Senator. He also was an Iowa Lakes Board of Trustee member from 1970 to 1988 and was Board President for nine of those years.

The 2014-15 students honored with the John P. "Jack" Kibbie Outstanding Service Award at the summer commencement ceremonies were Tyler Lecy of Nowthen, MN, Jeremey McDevitt of Arizona, and Trenton Meiners of Manson.

Tyler Lecy

"Tyler Lecy is not only one of our top scholars, but has been a leader from a young age," said his nominator, Daniel Lutat, Director of Wind Turbine Technology. "He is an Eagle Scout, a rare achievement, and an indicator of how Tyler demonstrates that leadership from the front is what is most needed in our society."

"His volunteerism has bettered his community in a selfless way, while developing servant leadership in a young man who will likely be a front runner in the energy field in short order. He exemplifies what our parents, industries and civic leaders look for in the future of America," said Lutat.

It is clear that Tyler has been an active student at Iowa Lakes while attending a rigorous program of study, maintaining top scholarship status while serving the campus and community at large in an exemplary way.

Jeremy McDevitt

Jeremey McDevitt is a non-traditional student and recent graduate of the Iowa Lakes Nursing program. He is also a former graduate of the Automotive Technology program. Consistently on the Dean's List, Jeremey has learned to balance his academic commitment with his enthusiasm for Iowa Lakes and helping his fellow students. Jeremey serves as an officer of the Emmetsburg Student Senate, assists with numerous student activities, and participates in study groups. His military/veteran background guides and inspires fellow students to reach their goals.

"Jeremey is mature, kind, conscientious, dependable, and eager to help. He is also the proud father of two beautiful little girls," said his nominator, Rhonda Frambach, Administrative Assistant to the Dean.

Trenton Meiners

"As president of the Student Senate, Trenton Meiners' actions and leadership have impacted the entire student body, as well as our communities. The ambassadorship that springs from his willingness to accept responsibility while a full-time student in a challenging program, and an employee of a well-respected company in CR Holland Crane Service of Forest City, have extended the reach of this young leader," said his nominator, Daniel Lutat, Director of Wind Turbine Technology.

Trenton's maturity rises from service to his country and carries forward to his service at Iowa Lakes Community College. Trenton's Army Reserve experience taught him the value of service, honor and commitment; his service to Iowa Lakes has further developed his leadership focus and influenced others to do the same. His commitment to his employer has made him a valuable team member in a crucial energy sector; his leadership in promoting Iowa Lakes around the state, and in our communities, has set him apart as an ambassador in Laker Blue and Gold.
