White Team Claims Victory In Pre-Season Scrimmage

August 26, 2014
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Fans of Emmetsburg E-Hawk Football got a chance to see the E-Hawks in action Friday at the annual Sports Drink Scrimmages at Duane Twait Field. Three controlled scrimmages were conducted featuring the E-Hawk Freshmen and Sophomores battling each other for a pair of quarters and the E-Hawk Varsity splitting up for the annual Black and White scrimmage for a pair of 12-minute quarters.

For the Freshman Scrimmage, the ninth graders played offense with Hunter McAllister at quarterback. There was no scoring in the Freshman scrimmage, but several nice plays and runs were made by the youngest E-Hawks in their 12-minutes against the Sophomore defense.

The Sophomores would then take over on offense for a 12-minute quarter and came up with a pair of scores. The first score came off a 12-yard touchdown run by Gage Jamison, and on the following play, which started at the 20 yard line, quarterback Will Schany kept the ball and raced down the sidelines for an 80-yard scoring run.

In the Varsity scrimmage, the White squad, with Zach Anderson at quarterback, took the offense first and drew first blood quickly against the Black shirts with 11:13 to go in the quarter off a 79-yard run by Thomas Schultes. The Point After Touchdown try failed, making the score 6-0.

The black shirts, with Clayton Freeman calling the signals, moved the ball well at times but would be forced to punt, giving the White squad another opportunity.

With 2:21 to go in the first quarter, Thomas Schultes would once again find the end zone from four yards out and then kicked the extra point for a 13-0 score.

There would be no scoring in the second quarter, as the Black defense made a stop and got the ball back, only to turnover on downs. The two teams would grind it out, but with 2:00 to go, a fumble by the White Team would see Grant Deitering recover the ball for the Black shirts at their own 27 yard line. The Black team would grind away to run the clock out for the evening.

The real season comes quickly as Emmetsburg will renew an old acquaintance from the days of Lakes Conference football this Friday when Storm Lake's Tornadoes come to town. Kickoff for the opening game of the 2014 season will be at 7 p.m.
