Harriett L. Laws 1940-2014

Funeral service for Harriett L. Laws will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard. The Rev. Neil Hayen will officiate.

Interment will be in Powhatten Cemetery at Plover. Arrangements by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.

Harriett Lucille Laws, daughter of Kenneth and Lena (Methe) Truelsen, was born July 11, 1940, in Havelock. She received her education in Mallard, graduating from Mallard High School in 1960.

On Dec. 26, 1961, Harriett was united in marriage to Lonnie Laws at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard. Harriett and Lonnie made their home in Palo Alto County as well as Storm Lake, Council Bluffs and 28 years in Cherokee before returning to rural Mallard.

Harriett was employed as the secretary at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee for several years. She also did bookkeeping in Cherokee and was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.

Harriett is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard and was a long time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Cherokee. Harriett enjoyed gardening and canning and freezing the produce she raised. She also loved sewing and quilting. She and Lonnie enjoyed golfing at area courses.

Harriett passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN, at the age of 74. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth and a brother, John Truelsen.

She is survived by her husband, Lonnie of Mallard; her daughters, Kendra (Curtis) Weiss of Des Moines and Kristina Wenck of Carlisle; grandchildren, Nicholas and Allison Wenck; her mother, Lena Truelsen of Mallard; her brother, Marlan Truelsen of Milton, FL; her sister, Marlene Joens of Rolfe; her mother-in-law, Viola Laws Sampson; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
