Voting Begins On Iowa Lakes Equipment Replacement Levy Renewal

August 14, 2014
Emmetsburg News

The Iowa Lakes Community College vote to renew the Equipment Replacement Levy has begun.

Absentee ballot requests are available and individuals who wish to vote may do so now at their local Auditor's office during regular business hours.

The special election will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Voters originally approved the 10-year levy in 2004. This is a renewal, not a new tax.

The Friends of Iowa Lakes committee supports the campaign and is coordinating an effort to seek voter approval.

"All of our communities benefit from the Equipment Levy," said Iowa Lakes Community College Foundation President Jerry Helmers. "A stellar example of that is the upgraded college video conferencing system which is located at each of the campuses.

"It's a privilege to support the Equipment Replacement Levy so that local businesses are able to hire employees who are ready to work," Helmers added.

For taxpayers, the six-cent levy costs $3.26 on a $100,000 home annually. For the college, the Equipment Levy provides about $360,000 annually.

"The taxpayer's return on the investment is seen every year when students graduate and move into local, high-tech, high-paying jobs," said Tom Manley, Friends of Iowa Lakes Treasurer. "This is the only thing on the ballot. Those who feel strongly should get out and support the Levy."

A video has been produced to highlight the college's tech savvy environment. Groups interested in discussing the renewal campaign or vieweing the video may contact the Friends of Iowa Lakes at 712-362-0408.

College administrators say that while the Equipment Replacement Levy does not cover all of the costs of instructional technology, it is essential to the learning process. Funds are also used to leverage large grants which empower the 21st Century Workforce.

Registered voters can vote absentee, or vote the day of the special election, Tuesday, Sept. 9.
