by Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

When Emmetsburg residents receive their September billing from Em- metsburg Municipal Utilities, they will see a bit of an increase in water and sanitary sewer rates.

The increase in rates went into effect the first of August and will be reflected on customers' bills next month.

"The adjustments to the water and sewer utilities rates are necessary in order to produce revenue adequate to fund future system improvements," said City Administrator John Bird.

"In 2015, the city and?EMU will undertake an infrastructure project involving the replacement of water and sewer mains under the blocks of streets slated for new pavement," Bird continued. "The replacement of utility facilities is a costly, yet necessary undertaking and maintaining rates that are adequate to fund such improvements is critically important."

Water rates will increase approximately 4.3-percent. That will result in an increase of $1.21 to the average users monthly water bill.

Sewer rates will increase approximately 4.99-percent. That will result in the average user's bill increasing by $1.67 on a monthly basis.

The last time water and sewer rates went up was September 2013, about one year ago.
